Tent Camping Versus Motor Home Camping
Tent Camping or Motor Home Camping, what is your preference? Camping trips have long been a family favorite. From weekend excursions to roughing it for the entire summer, millions of people enjoy great camping adventures all over the country. There are countless places to visit, pitch a tent or pull into your favorite space with a fancy motor home. You can find the perfect waterfall, fishing sites, membership-based campgrounds, mountainside views and lake points to take the entire family. Among the plethora of destination choices, you also get to decide on tent camping or a motor home camping trip.
If you’ve been camping a million times or you’re planning your very first camping trip, this might be a tough decision. Definitely take in the general and special needs of your campers and try to make the best informed decision for your party. We’ll take a look at some of the basic pro’s and con’s to tent and motor home camping.
Tent Camping
When you think about tent camping, picture yourself as close to nature as possible. You’re outdoors and the only thing between you and mother nature is a few strips of vinyl and a zipper. Tent camping is truly for those who like to experience a closeness with nature, its beauty and a “roughing it” style of adventure. An obvious advantage to tent camping is the cost. Tents are available for two people to share up to the entire family. They’ve got domes or squares, every different color imaginable and of course, the prices vary depending on brand, size and quality. You can purchase a tent virtually anywhere and are available online as well. Believe it or not, there are tents priced as low as $20!
Tent camping has some not to favorable features as well. If you are in an area prone to flash floods or bad weather (snow, sleet, hail, etc.) a tent may not be the safest or most comfortable choice. While most tents are waterproof, there is still the chance of water seeping in through the windows or even the top if they are subjected to constant moisture. If you’ve never purchased a tent before and plan on doing some tent camping, choose one that comes highly recommended. This way you’ll be as prepared as possible for any inclement weather mishaps.
Motor Home Camping
There are those that really don’t care for being outdoors the entire time, thus a motor home or RV camping might be a better choice. Just like tents, motor homes have their ups and downs as well. The biggest reason for not going with motor home camping is purely cost related. These houses on wheels are expensive, and can even dig into the six-figure wallets and deeper. On the plus side, you don’t actually have to purchase a motor home to camp in one. There are companies and individuals who rent to campers. This allows even the budget campers the ability to camp in style.
A nice feature to motor homes is the home-away-from-home camping experience. Many of them today are fully loaded with kitchens, living area, sleep areas, full bathrooms and a ton of cabinet and storage space. Having access to running water while camping is especially nice when you are out in the woods. Buying, packing and hauling jugs of water can get to be a nuisance. Another great feature is the technological advances. In some motor homes you’ll enjoy televisions with satellite, DVD players and full stereo and surround sound capabilities. When the sun is high in the sky and you’re trying to avoid getting over-heated, sit back and enjoy your favorite shows.
With all the choices under the sun for the camping location, now you’ve got the added choice of tent camping or motor home camping. Review the above advantages and disadvantages with your family and compare notes. While some may only be interested in living the high life in a motor home, you’ll be surprised by the number that will want to go tent camping exclusively!
