You can hike without the need for "tours" but you will need somewhere to stay and I found a great idea. A friend recommended I try and stay in a monastery or convent as they had. I googled and found a great site <a href="http://www.monasterystays.com" rel="nofollow">www.monasterystays.com</a> which is an on-line booking service with access to over 500 places all over Italy. They look good, are safe, clean and good value for money. This website has access to 5 monasteries in CT. I'm using them on my next trip to Sicily in Febuary 2010 so I'd recommend checking them out.
